Midland, Michigan is properly named because it is in the center of the Lower Peninsula east of Mt. Pleasant and west of Bay City. Once an Indian village, Midland has grown over the centuries to become known as a “City of Science and Culture.” As recently as the 1850’s the Chippewa Indians were fishing, growing crops and hunting. 6,000 acres were set aside for the Chippewa Tribe under the 1819 Treaty of Saginaw in which 1,000 acres are now the proud home of the Chippewa Nature Center. There are many locations near to Midland that are still Indian Reservations including Mt. Pleasant which is home to nearly 8,800 members of the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Nation.
Throughout the second half of the 19th century, Midland and the surrounding area grew its economy through farming, logging, fishing and trade. Sawmills were built and railroad tracks were placed through the city helping to drive commerce and leading to the development of Midland. In 1887, Midland became incorporated as a city. 1890 became a big year for Midland as it was the site of the creation of one of the most recognized companies in the world: The Dow Chemical Company. Founded by Herbert Henry Dow, his business helped Midland survive the end of the logging industry and create the technology industry.
Midland is still the headquarters for two of Dow’s companies making it the home of two companies listed on the Fortune 500 list. Midland is also home to the largest gas-fueled, steam recovery co-generation facility in North America designed to provide electricity and fuel, it was once going to be a nuclear power plant. The minor league team the Great Lakes Loons who are a Single A ball club partnered with the Los Angeles Dodgers play at the Dow Diamond Stadium. Midland also is considered the unofficial softball capital of the world because they host many softball tournaments for local, national and international contests. The City Forest is the perfect place for hikers, bikers and joggers and, in the winter months, there is ice skating, sledding, cross-country skiing and more.
