Once an Indian village, Midland has grown over the centuries to become known as a “City of Science and Culture.” As recently as the 1850’s the Chippewa Indians were fishing, growing crops and hunting. 6,000 acres were set aside for the Chippewa Tribe under the 1819 Treaty of Saginaw in which 1,000 acres are now the proud home of the Chippewa Nature Center. There are many locations near to Midland that are still Indian Reservations including Mt. Pleasant which is home to nearly 8,800 members of the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Nation.

Founded by Herbert Henry Dow, his business helped Midland survive the end of the logging industry and create the technology industry.

Midland is still the headquarters for two of Dow’s companies making it the home of two companies listed on the Fortune 500 list. Midland is also home to the largest gas-fueled, steam recovery co-generation facility in North America designed to provide electricity and fuel, it was once going to be a nuclear power plant.
