They established a sawmill and a few places for occupancy but they never had the intention of creating a city. In 1855, the area comprised of nothing more than two mills, a handful of cottages, two log huts and Native American wigwams. It was not until 1868 that the village of Kawkawlin was established and started to have permanent settlers. The name Kawkawlin has Indian origins and means “place of pike fish” due to its proximity to the water. Several communities continued to pop up over the years as Kawkawlin and the surrounding area developed into a small suburban community.
