Freeland was originally the home to the Chippewa Indians who lived in a vast territory throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region. Via the Treaty of Saginaw of 1819, the Chippewa Indians received 6,000 acres of land; nearby Mt. Pleasant is still considered an Indian Reservation. In the 1850’s, the lumbering industry took off and brought in many new settlers looking for opportunity. The name Freeland comes from the owner of a tavern frequented by many of those working in the lumber industry as well as trade along the rivers. This well-liked tavern owner became one of the many business owners who thrived with the industries that drove the economy in the 1800’s. The MBS International Airport which offers regional flights was a holding area for German prisoners during World War II.
One of the most prolific historic sites in Freeland is Leeman’s Green Applebarn which is perfect for enjoying cider and donuts every fall. Originally opened 1889, this farm spans 100 acres and is a great place to come to for picking raspberries, blackberries and apples or checking out their main barn and purchasing fresh baked goods and cider. The current owners of Leeman’s Green Applebarn are the 7th generation from the original founders.
