The history of Bay City finds its modern roots in the early 1830s when a man named Leon Tromble settled in the area. Considered the first settler, Tromble was the first person to build a log cabin right on the Saginaw River. It was not very long before more folks started coming to the area and named it Lower Saginaw. In 1857, the county line was drawn through Lower Saginaw creating Saginaw County to the south and Bay City to the north. It was at this time that the name Bay City was adopted and, by 1865, Bay City was officially incorporated as a city. Throughout the 19th century, the economy thrived on the sawmill and shipbuilding industry. Shipbuilders working in Bay City constructed many ships that would be used by the United States Navy.

As the home of the county offices, Bay County and Bay City are two of the main employers along with the Bay Regional Medical Center. Bay City and the Bay County area also has many internationally recognized corporations with bases in the city including:

Some of the events that Downtown Bay City hosts are the Bay City Polar Bear Plunge and Chili Cook-Off as well as beer fests and art shows. Weekly in the summers there are movies in the park and concerts in the park.

Riverside parks and walkways allow you to enjoy the scenery while looking out onto the water and the historical architecture harkens back to the 19th all the way through to the modern day. You will surely love to explore downtown Bay City just as much as we have.

Being right on the water means you get scenic views in the summer. If you like spending time outdoors, Bay City offer 238 acres of park area some of which contain skate parks, boat launches, basketball and tennis courts, and hiking trails. Carroll Park is over 13 acres and is considered the oldest park in Bay City dating back to 1875. The Edward M. Golson Boat Launch and Nature Area spans 43 acres and features trails, two boat launches, fishing platforms and river viewing.
